Balloon App Alternative 2026: An Honest Comparison After Balloon Shut Down

According to two German guide sites, Balloon has been unusable since September 30, 2026. We compare five Balloon alternatives honestly: content, language, health insurance, prices - and where each app genuinely wins.

Disclosure: NeuroBeatX is a competing product to the apps reviewed here. We verify every price and claim against the vendor’s own pages, and we say where they beat us.

If you are looking for a Balloon app alternative, you probably had a fixed routine with Balloon: the short meditation before your first meeting, the sleep exercise in the evening, maybe a course your health insurer paid for. And then it was gone. The annoying part is less that an app disappears and more that a habit you worked hard to build suddenly has nowhere to live.

The short answer: the best Balloon app alternative depends on what you used Balloon for. For German-language guided meditation with a possible insurer subsidy, 7Mind is the most obvious replacement. If you want meditation, sleep help and focus music in one app and like having a session built from one sentence, NeuroBeatX fits. Test two apps side by side for a week.

This article compares the five apps people consider most often after Balloon's end: 7Mind, Headspace, Calm, Endel and NeuroBeatX. We make one of them. So read this comparison the way you should read any comparison written by a provider - critically. That is why we also tell you clearly where the others are better, and where we would simply be the wrong choice for you.

Here you get: what is known about Balloon's end (and what is not), what happens to your subscription, course and downloads, a comparison table with eight criteria, an honest answer to the health-insurance question, a reality check on what these apps can do for sleep and stress, and at the end a 7-day test that makes the decision for you.

Balloon app shut down: what really happened - and what is not official

Balloon was a German-language meditation app from the publisher Gruner + Jahr. The trade magazine W&V reported on its launch in June 2018: Balloon was conceived as the app companion to the mindfulness magazines Flow and Hygge, promised "better sleep, less stress, more focus", and psychologist and neuroscientist Boris Bornemann provided the scientific basis and narrated the content himself. For many people, that voice is the real reason the goodbye is hard.

On the end: according to two German guide sites, Balloon has been unusable since September 30, 2026. Entspannungshelden wrote on August 19, 2026 that Balloon ends on 30.09.2026; Headletic wrote on September 16, 2026 that Balloon has been unusable since September 30, 2026. Both sites run mindfulness apps themselves and recommend themselves as the alternative - and they say so openly.

What we did not find: an official press release or announcement from the provider with a date and a reason. Entspannungshelden states explicitly that no concrete official reason has been published so far. A change.org petition from July 23, 2026 says the app is to be discontinued "as part of the strategic realignment of its previous owner" and asks AOK and other statutory health insurers to consider taking it over. Whether anything comes of that is not known. We therefore treat the date as well documented, but not officially confirmed.

What happens to your Balloon subscription, course and downloads?

The bad news first: according to Entspannungshelden, downloaded meditations were stored only inside the app, not as freely accessible audio files on your phone. After the shutdown they can no longer be played, and a transfer to another platform is not planned. If you are especially attached to particular exercises, at least write down their titles and structure - it will help you find something similar in a new app.

On subscriptions, purchases and insurer-funded courses, there is no public, binding rule we can document. Both guide sites advise clarifying open questions directly with Balloon. That is our advice too - we cannot promise you a refund and do not want to pretend we know more than the sources.

  • Check your account, or the service you paid through, to see whether a subscription is still active, and cancel it so nothing keeps running.
  • Contact Balloon support with questions about purchases or remaining terms.
  • If you used Balloon through a prevention course from your health insurer, ask your insurer which courses it funds now - many insurers subsidize several prevention offers, not just one.
  • Save notes on your favorite exercises before you forget them: length, topic, time of day. That becomes your yardstick for the replacement.

How do you recognize a good Balloon app alternative?

Before you compare prices, get clear on what you actually used Balloon for. Most people are not looking for "a meditation app" but for a solution to one specific moment of the day. These five questions help you sort - take two minutes and answer them honestly before you download or subscribe to anything:

  • Language: do you want guided content consistently in German? Then check carefully before subscribing how much of the offer is actually narrated in German rather than just having a translated interface.
  • Health insurance: was reimbursement through a prevention course important to you? Then there is a clear answer, and it is not NeuroBeatX (more on that in a moment).
  • Voice or music: do you need a voice that guides you, or rather sound that gets you into a state - to fall asleep, to wind down, to focus?
  • Structure or spontaneity: do you like courses that build on each other over weeks, or do you open the app spontaneously when your head is full?
  • One place for everything: do you want meditation, sleep help and focus music in one app, or do you not mind juggling two or three subscriptions?

Balloon meditation app replacement: voice, sound or both?

If you are looking for a Balloon meditation app replacement, the most important distinction is not price but format. At the core there are three types of apps, and each of the five alternatives in this comparison mainly belongs to one of them.

Type 1 - voice and course: a narrator guides you through exercises, often in courses that build over days or weeks. That is closest to what Balloon was. 7Mind and Headspace are at home here, and Calm also offers guided programs.

Type 2 - sound without guidance: music, noise or soundscapes that play while you work, read or fall asleep. Here you do not have to "do it right". Endel is the best-known example of this approach, and the big meditation apps now also have music and sound sections.

Type 3 - music and meditation in one place: apps that offer both equally, so you find a focus session in the morning, a short meditation at lunch and sleep music in the evening in the same app. That is NeuroBeatX's approach.

Many former Balloon users only notice when switching that they used the app for two very different things: guided exercises and simply calm in their ears. If that is you, it is worth looking specifically for type 3 - or deliberately combining two apps.

The five Balloon alternatives at a glance

7Mind is from Berlin and is the most obvious replacement if you used Balloon mainly for German-language guided meditations and courses. The offer includes meditations, courses and sleep content. The big difference from everyone else in this comparison: 7Mind offers ZPP-certified prevention courses whose cost statutory health insurers can reimburse up to 100%. More on that in the health-insurance section.

Headspace focuses on guided courses, sleep content ("Sleepcasts"), soundscapes, sleep music, white noise and focus music. The library is large and well structured; according to its website there are more than 1,000 exercises. The website is available in German; the app, however, comes from the English-speaking world, so check how much of it is narrated in German for you. Headspace advertises a 14-day trial on its own website.

Calm is a San Francisco company, founded in 2012, best known for its "Sleep Stories" - narrated stories for falling asleep. On top of that come breathing exercises, a daily meditation, multi-day programs, music and soundscapes. Here too: check before subscribing which content is available in German.

Endel is not a meditation app in the classic sense; it generates soundscapes that, according to the provider, adapt in real time to inputs such as time of day, weather, heart rate and location. There are modes for relax, focus, sleep and activity. For sound in the background without having to choose anything, it is a distinct and interesting approach. Guided meditations with a voice are not its focus.

NeuroBeatX - that is us - combines music and meditation in one app. The sessions for focus, sleep and calm are made by real artists and tuned with neuroscience-informed techniques such as binaural beats, pink and brown noise and steady tempo structures. On top of that come guided meditations for sleep, morning, stress, body scan and loving-kindness. The technology is patent pending. The app is available in your language, including German.

What "smart" means at NeuroBeatX in practice

The biggest difference from a classic meditation library: you do not have to search. With Smart Wellness you describe in one sentence how you are doing - for example "head full, early presentation tomorrow, can't switch off" - and the AI builds a matching session from it. Smart List assembles a whole playlist for a goal, such as a two-hour work block or the last half hour before sleep.

That is especially handy if you used Balloon spontaneously: in the evening when you could not fall asleep, or at lunch when your head was blocked. In exactly those moments nobody wants to scroll through categories and choose between twenty similar-sounding titles. One sentence is faster than any search.

The second difference is the music itself. It is composed and produced by people, not by a generator on an assembly line. Whether that matters to you is a matter of taste - but taste decides whether you still open an app in three months. If you like the music, you press play more often.

What NeuroBeatX is not: a pure course platform with programs that build over weeks, and not a prevention course your health insurer pays for. If that is exactly what you want, 7Mind or Headspace is the better choice. We would rather say that here than after your first billing month.

Balloon app alternative comparison: the table

Prices and trial periods change often and differ by platform and region. So always check current terms directly with the provider before you decide. Where we found no reliable, publicly listed price on an official page, we do not give one and write "check with the provider". All details as of October 22, 2026.

Is there a Balloon alternative that health insurance pays for?

Yes - and it is not ours. Many Balloon users came to the app through a prevention course from their health insurer. If that is exactly what matters to you, 7Mind is the clearest answer among the apps in this comparison.

According to 7Mind, a ZPP-certified prevention course costs €99. Each course lasts eight weeks, one module per week. Statutory health insurers can reimburse the course cost up to 100%, and the course includes one year of free app access, with no subscription and no cancellation needed. With 14 insurers, including BARMER, KKH and SBK, 7Mind says there is direct access without paying upfront. According to BARMER, members aged 18 and over can use 7Mind free for twelve months.

Important context: this is not an "app on prescription" (DiGA) but a prevention course. How much your insurer covers exactly and whether you have to pay upfront varies from insurer to insurer. So ask your health insurer directly which prevention courses on mindfulness and stress reduction it currently funds.

Headspace, Calm and Endel: we found no insurer funding for Germany. NeuroBeatX has no insurer funding and no DiGA status. If reimbursement is the deciding criterion for you, it would be dishonest to recommend anything else.

Which Balloon alternative suits whom?

A comparison that concedes nothing to the competition is advertising. Here is where we would honestly send you - depending on what you used Balloon for:

  • Pick 7Mind if health insurance matters to you and you want German-language guided meditation. The ZPP-certified prevention course with a year of app access is a real advantage that NeuroBeatX cannot offer.
  • Pick Headspace if you want depth in structured courses and do not mind that the app comes from the English-speaking world. The 14-day trial gives you time to check.
  • Pick Calm if narrated stories are what mainly carry you to sleep. Sleep Stories are what Calm is known for.
  • Pick Endel if you want sound that just runs and adapts itself without you ever choosing anything - and if you do not need a voice.
  • Pick NeuroBeatX if you want music and meditation in one place, would rather say in one sentence how you are doing than scroll through a library, and care that the music is made by people you would also listen to by choice.
  • Combine two apps if you need both: for example an insurer-funded course for guided meditation and a music app for focus and sleep. That is not a failure; it is often the most honest solution.

Does a meditation app help with sleep and stress? What is realistic

None of these apps - ours included - is a treatment. If you have been sleeping badly for a long time or stress and anxiety weigh heavily on your daily life, a medical or psychotherapeutic assessment is the right first step. An app can support a habit; it cannot replace a diagnosis.

What research supports is unspectacular but useful. A meta-analysis in JAMA Internal Medicine (Goyal et al., 2014) found moderate evidence that mindfulness meditation programs can somewhat reduce anxiety, depression and pain - with rather small effects. A Cochrane review on music for sleep problems (Jespersen et al., 2022) found moderate-certainty evidence that listening to music may improve sleep quality.

For concentration, a meta-analysis (Vasilev et al., 2018) shows that background sound tends to disrupt reading and that intelligible speech and music with lyrics are the most distracting. That is a good reason to use instrumental sound while working - and to save guided meditations with a voice for breaks and the evening.

Many people also notice that the effect depends less on the perfect app than on whether they actually open it regularly. That is why the most important question when switching is not "Which app is best?" but "Which one will I still use in three months?". That is exactly what the test at the end of this article is built for.

What does a Balloon replacement cost per month?

For context: at its launch in 2018, Balloon cost about €12 per month or €80 per year, according to W&V. That is roughly still the range most alternatives sit in today.

According to its official pricing page, 7Mind costs €14.99 on the monthly plan. The annual plan is €6.49 per month, i.e. €41.88 in the first year and €77.99 per year after that, with a 7-day free trial. Through the insurer prevention course, access for one year can be fully or partly reimbursed.

For Headspace, Calm and Endel we found no clear, publicly listed prices for Germany on the official pages. Prices differ by platform and promotion - check directly with them before subscribing.

NeuroBeatX costs US$12.99 per month or US$115.20 per year on the web after the free month. Billing is in US dollars. You need a card for the free month, but you can cancel anytime.

Our advice on the math: if you only want guided meditations and your health insurer chips in, the insurer course is hard to beat financially. If, on the other hand, you currently use different apps for meditation, sleep help and focus music, it is worth checking whether a single app would do.

How we compared

Transparency first: NeuroBeatX is our own product. This comparison is a desk review of publicly accessible pages, carried out in October 2026 - the providers' official pricing and product pages, health insurer pages, trade press and two German guide sites on Balloon's end. You will find all sources at the bottom of this page.

What we did not do: we ran no hands-on tests with participants, no user study and no measurements. So we do not claim that one app "works better" than another. Where a statement comes only from the provider itself, such as Endel's adaptive technology, we mark it with "according to the provider".

We only took prices and trial periods from official pages. Where that was not possible, it says "check with the provider". We found no official announcement of Balloon's end; the date comes from two German guide sites that both offer apps themselves. If something changes or you find a mistake, we update the article.

The 7-day test: how to find your Balloon replacement

Do not read three more comparisons. Test two candidates side by side for one week, in exactly the moments when you used to open Balloon. Each evening, write one sentence about how it went.

  1. Days 1-2: use each app in your typical Balloon moment, for example in the evening before sleep. Pay attention to one question only: did you look forward to it or force yourself?
  2. Days 3-4: try Smart Wellness in NeuroBeatX. Describe in one sentence how you feel and see whether the session fits your moment. In the other app, choose deliberately yourself.
  3. Days 5-6: test a moment Balloon did not cover - such as a work block with focus music or a short break between two appointments.
  4. Day 7: read your seven sentences. Keep the app you opened most often on your own and cancel the other before its trial ends.

FAQ

Is the Balloon app being shut down?

Yes. According to two German guide sites (Entspannungshelden and Headletic), Balloon has been unusable since September 30, 2026. We did not find an official press release from the provider with a date and reason. A change.org petition asks AOK and other insurers to consider taking it over; whether anything comes of it is not known.

Why was Balloon shut down?

According to Entspannungshelden, no official reason has been published so far. The change.org petition speaks of a "strategic realignment" by the previous owner. Nothing more is publicly documented, so we do not speculate further here.

Can I keep listening to downloaded Balloon meditations?

No. According to Entspannungshelden, downloads were stored only inside the app and can no longer be played after the shutdown. A transfer to another platform is not planned. Write down the titles and lengths of your favorite exercises so you can look for something similar in a new app.

Will I get my money back for my Balloon subscription?

There is no public, binding rule on this that we can document. Clarify questions about your subscription, remaining term and purchases directly with Balloon support or through the service you paid with, and make sure no subscription keeps running.

What is the best Balloon app alternative in German?

It depends on what you used Balloon for. For German-language guided meditation with a possible insurer subsidy, 7Mind is the most obvious replacement. If you want meditation, sleep help and focus music in one app and like having a session built from one sentence, NeuroBeatX fits. Ideally, test two apps side by side for a week.

Is there a meditation app that health insurance pays for?

7Mind offers ZPP-certified prevention courses for €99 whose cost statutory health insurers can reimburse up to 100%, including one year of app access. According to BARMER, members aged 18 and over can use 7Mind free for twelve months. NeuroBeatX has no insurer funding. Ask your health insurer what exactly it covers.

What should I do if I used Balloon through my health insurer?

Ask your health insurer which prevention courses on mindfulness and stress reduction it funds now. Many insurers subsidize several offers. Questions about a running Balloon course are best clarified directly with Balloon support.

Is there a free alternative to Balloon?

Through a prevention course reimbursed by your health insurer, an app can be practically free for you, for example with 7Mind. Otherwise most apps offer a free trial: Headspace 14 days according to its website, 7Mind 7 days on the annual plan and NeuroBeatX 1 month free on the web.

Which app helps you fall asleep?

Many people find that calm music, steady noise or narrated stories make it easier to switch off - a Cochrane review found evidence that listening to music may improve sleep quality. Which form helps you, you only find out by trying. If sleep problems persist, please talk to a doctor.

Is there an app with meditation and focus music in one?

Yes. Headspace has a focus-music section alongside its courses. NeuroBeatX is built for both from the ground up: artist-made music for focus, sleep and calm plus guided meditations for sleep, morning, stress, body scan and loving-kindness, and Smart Wellness builds you a session from one sentence.

Can I cancel NeuroBeatX during the free month?

Yes. You need a card for the free month on the web, but you can cancel anytime and then pay nothing. After that, NeuroBeatX costs US$12.99 per month or US$115.20 per year.

Your first session after Balloon

You do not have to decide anything today. Just try whether the moment you used Balloon for feels good with NeuroBeatX:

  1. Create your account on the web and open Smart Wellness.
  2. Describe in one sentence how you feel right now - for example "tired, but my head is still awake".
  3. Listen to the session built for you in your usual Balloon moment, tonight or before your next work block.
  4. Over the next few days, also try a guided meditation and a focus session and compare honestly with your second-choice app.
  5. Start with 1 month free on the web - card required, cancel anytime.

After that, US$12.99 per month or US$115.20 per year. If another app suits you better, just cancel in time - the test will still have given you the answer.

1 month free · $12.99/mo after · cancel anytime
